Spirit Bear Art Farm is a British Columbia based organization that works in partnership with the Canet Foundation. Each year we provide a selected number of grants to support Canadian artists, writers, musicians and screenwriters. In past years we have also granted poetry and writing prizes for children in Sooke Region Museum events. Support is varying, and may include artist residencies on the Farm’s inspiring grounds.

We also annually grant a number of tuition scholarships to graduate students at the University of Victoria School of Child and Youth Care and New Mexico Highlands University School of Social Work who intend to work in the field of child counseling and psychotherapy. Over the past few years 30 select students have received Spirit Bear Awards to assist with their higher education and many are now in leadership roles in the fields of social work, child counseling and psychotherapy.

*Spirit Bear Awards are granted upon recommendation of the faculty of the respective universities and by recommendation of our group of advisory artists. Please do not apply directly for artist grants or scholarships to Spirit Bear Art Farm. Residencies are by invitation.

The idea is to preserve and steward this historic farm as a place that ‘Grows Art’.

As a place, this old farm is 103 extraordinary acres of green grassy flowered meadow, huge stones, rocky headlands and dense forest at the edge of the Salish Sea on Vancouver Island. Here, the moving tides and waves and wind and weather constantly recreates the shoreline.

The seasons bring migrations of birds that add their songs to the music of the winds in the gigantic trees on the property. Cougars and bears and deer roam through the property on ancestral paths as hawks, eagles, giant vultures and ravens prowl the sky. Along the nine different beaches on the property gulls, oystercatchers, kingfishers and great blue herons streak and dive through the sky.

The experience of Spirit Bear Art Farm is intended to be one that brings together art, spirit, creativity and healing.
